Pakistan’s mobile telecom market is entering a major new phase. Ufone has moved remarkably close to Jazz in subscriber market share after the consolidation of Telenor Pakistan with Ufone. At the same time, the country’s cellular subscriber base crossed 211 million in September 2026, highlighting the scale of mobile connectivity in Pakistan.

Ufone and Jazz are now almost level

Figures reported by PhoneWorld and ProPakistani, citing data from Arif Habib Limited for September 2026, put Jazz at 76.44 million subscribers and Ufone at 76.29 million. The difference is around 150,000 subscribers. In market-share terms, Jazz stood at 36.15% while Ufone reached 36.08% — a gap of only 0.07 percentage points.

The figures show the combined scale of Ufone’s business after Telenor Pakistan’s consolidation. The sharp jump in Ufone’s reported share should not be read as 21 percentage points of new customers joining in one month; it largely reflects the addition of Telenor’s subscriber base to the combined operator.

How the Telenor–Ufone consolidation changed the market

Telenor Pakistan was formally amalgamated into Pakistan Telecommunication Mobile Limited (PTML), which operates Ufone, after the required approval in July 2026. The consolidation brought the two businesses under one company and changed the competitive picture of the cellular market. It also created a larger operator with a broader subscriber base and an opportunity to combine network resources over time.

What does this mean for mobile users?

A close market-share race can encourage operators to compete for customers, but subscriber numbers alone do not prove that a network has better signals, faster internet or cheaper packages. Those outcomes depend on investment, spectrum, congestion, backhaul capacity and local coverage.

For a useful performance comparison, a September 2026 report on the PTA’s second-quarter mobile network benchmarking showed Zong recording the highest national average 4G download speed at 18.55 Mbps, followed by Jazz at 17.61 Mbps and Ufone at 12.82 Mbps. Ufone led the national mobile gaming category in that assessment. Results can vary by city, device, indoor location and time of day.

What should customers check before switching networks?

  • Local coverage: Ask people in your home, workplace and regular travel areas about signal strength.
  • Indoor performance: Test calls and mobile data inside buildings, not just outdoors.
  • Internet speed: Run speed tests at the times you normally use the internet.
  • Package details: Compare data limits, on-net and off-net minutes, validity, taxes and auto-renewal conditions.
  • SIM and account changes: Follow official operator messages for any migration, SIM replacement or account instructions. Do not share OTPs or CNIC details with unofficial callers.

Will Ufone overtake Jazz?

The September 2026 figures show a very narrow gap, but they do not guarantee that Ufone will become the largest operator in the next reporting period. Subscriber movement, number portability, network quality and future customer retention will shape the result. Jazz remains slightly ahead in the cited September figures.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ufone now bigger than Jazz in Pakistan?

No. In the September 2026 figures cited by industry reports, Jazz remained slightly ahead with 76.44 million subscribers compared with Ufone’s 76.29 million.

Why did Ufone’s market share increase sharply?

The reported increase largely reflects the consolidation of Telenor Pakistan’s subscriber base with Ufone, rather than an equivalent number of customers newly joining Ufone in one month.

Does a larger subscriber base mean better internet?

No. Network experience depends on coverage, capacity, spectrum, congestion and local conditions. Check independent performance results and test the service in your own area.
